THE MAKERS
Saidpur Enterprises comprises two groups: Action BagHandicrafts and Eastern Screen Printers. Its Action Bagsubsidiary employs women artisans who make avariety of jute products. Some have husbands who areunderemployed; others are widowed. Action Bagprovides literacy classes, and training on nutrition,women's legal rights, educational awareness andfinance.
Following the 1971 war that established Bangladesh,Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) started clinics andnutrition centers in Saidpur to help address foodshortages and disease. In 1976 MCC began a programto help mothers of malnourished children coming to itsnutrition center. This temporary employment programbecame Action Bag Handicrafts, and now supportsartisans
